In 1886, Canadian missionary Alexander Croft Shaw became enchanted with Karuizawa for its sights, so rich in natural beauty. He stayed for a summer two years later, building Karuizawa's first summer residence in 1888. As Shaw’s recommendations of the area as a summer getaway increased its renown with celebrities, Karuizawa went from being simply a place to escape the hot months to one of Japan's premier resort spots, offering rest and relaxation every season of the year.
