The charm of Shiojiri wine - The history of woven, the people who gather

Shiojiri wine was first brewed by Hayashi Goichi and others in the middle of the Meiji period, when Toshima Rikiji and others developed Kikyogahara, which was a wilderness.
Not only is it the first to start introducing European varieties such as Merlot and Chardonnay, and has established itself as one of the country's leading wine regions, but it also has budding wineries in the works, and over 5,000 enthusiasts gather every year at the classic Shiojiri Winery Festa.
I was captivated by the charm of Shiojiri wine, so I visited people along with the wine.

Local farmers and Mercians take on the world-famous Merlot of Shiojiri
Farmers and manufacturers who want to make good wine have one single thought
When it comes to Shiojiri wines from around 40 years ago, most of them were Concord for red and Niagara for white. During this period, it was the late Asai Shogo, Sanraku Ocean (now Mercian), who passionately persuaded local farmers and started growing authentic Merlot in this area in Japan for the first time.
14 years after the cultivation began, the attempt was toShinshuKikyogahara Merlot 1985/86 won the Great Gold Award at the Ljubriana International Wine Competition for the second consecutive year (1989-90). This was also the moment when Japanese wine was recognized by the world.

"The Mercian staff frequently come to the fields to inspect their growth and deepen their interactions with farmers. The grapes are very strict, but the passion for wine is the same. I think I need to make good grapes," Hayashi and Ohnoda all agree.
Mr. Asai's desire to "produce world-renowned wine" has been passed down as the pride of the manufacturer and local farmers.

Kikyogahara Merlot is highly regarded internationally. This is a cooperative of local farmers who grow grapes, and currently has 15 members. He is working hard to grow wine grapes in collaboration with Mercian.

I want to make a unique wine. A winery dream that will come true in your hometown
Shocked by Shiojiri wine, he went from a chef to a domaine
It was about 12 years ago that Inagaki, who moved to Tokyo after graduating from high school and worked as a chef in Tokyo, became interested in wine. It all started when I was shocked by the wine I tasted while helping out at a local winery. "When I think of Shiojiri wine, I had the impression that it was sweet and juice-like. But after drinking it for the first time in a while, there were more varieties and a lot of wines with a strong fruitiness were born. I was surprised to see how delicious wines can be made in my hometown," says Inagaki.

While running a wine bar in front of Shiojiri Station, I attended the Wine University, a class held by Shiojiri City, where I learned about cultivation, brewing, and management, and took advantage of the wine zone system to open my long-awaited winery on my parents' grounds this year.
"Even though it's called Shiojiri, it's large, and the area where I grew up is 850m above sea level. My goal is to find the variety that is suitable for this land and bring out the wine that can only be made here," his dreams expand.

He is the owner of a new winery who was fascinated by Shiojiri wine from his hometown and obtained a license to brew fruit sake this summer. During lunch, he cultivates and brews grapes, and spreads his greatness as the owner chef of the wine bar "Brasserie no Vin."

You can actually taste and find the Shiojiri wine of your choice
Compare over 40 unique wines in your favorite amounts
Fontana del Vino, in front of Shiojiri Station, is a cafe and wine bar that has stocked over 40 types of Shiojiri wine since its opening. The most distinctive feature is that it is sold by weight using a glass. "There are 10 wineries in Shiojiri City, both large and small, and there are many grape varieties grown, so I would like you to compare different wines," says the store manager Nonaka. For example, even if the merlot, a representative variety of Shiojiri, has a very different taste and aroma depending on the region and winery.

There are also some recommendations that you would definitely like to marry. "Maybe because they grew up in the same place, Shiojiri vegetables and wine go well together, no matter which ones they combine.ShinshuIt's also fun to find surprisingly good combinations, such as salmon and Pinot Noir."
It is located on the Shiojiri Station rotary and is easily accessible. We also recommend a trip where you can find your favorite wine before visiting the winery.

Manager Nonaka Kenichi
He is originally from Yokohama and has worked at Shiojiri for about 12 years. "I liked Shiojiri because of the unusual nature of the winery nearby and the delicious vegetables. I feel like the climate is similar to Tuscany, Italy," says Nonaka.

Shiojiri Wine Seminar: "Eating wine grapes! Comparing wine and taste" This special seminar allows you to compare the tastes of wine grapes with six different wines made from these varieties.
