The problems facing Japanese forests are becoming more serious every year, such as the difficulty of removing thinning timber due to the combination of cutting costs and lumber costs, and the damage caused by wild birds and animals due to a decrease in the number of hunters.

"KI-no" is a project that brings together interior products that use local wood as their main material, and aims to bring attention to issues related to forests and consider the value of trees together. With the concept of "Beyond The Japanese Creation", the company started in 2022 with four members: Osawa Nobuaki, the master carpenter of Sukiya Carpenter, the company's vice president, Osawa Fumiyasu, the company's vice president and younger brother of Osawa's Osawa, Takatoshi Takatoshi, vice president of Yanagisawa Forestry and Tsuneji Takatoshi, the representative director of Irie Co., Ltd., an apparel company in Tokyo, and director of "KI-no."

Osawa, the third generation of Osawa Architects, became a student of Nakamura Soji, a sukiya carpenter in Kyoto, and used the knowledge he learned to succeed the family business. We have used natural materials and have used our high level of technical skills, experience and ideas to create a space created by Sukiya, which makes use of wood. On the other hand, it is difficult to obtain suitable wood, so they sometimes work with the slugs to enter the forest and find the right material and cut it down. The establishment of the Ki-no project was also due to Osawa and Watanabe actually entering the mountains with Takariki.

"For the client, who wanted to use "root-bending cedar" that had been bent from the roots due to the weight of snow, to build a house, I went to the forests of Otani Village to look for materials. I learned that even though the trees are growing at the cutting period, the slopes are strong, so the trees are not costly to be taken out after cutting, and the trees are left unattended. I wondered if it's okay to continue like this."

This is what Watanabe, who is also a product designer, says. When I studied abroad in London, England in my early 20s, I was inspired by the attitude of young people from the area who were willing to share their ideas with an independent attitude, and I once again realized the beauty of Japanese wooden architecture. I thought it was necessary to raise and discuss the issue of devastated Japanese forests, so I launched "KI-no" with Mr. Oto, a fellow student from my studies abroad.

"While I work in architecture, I can directly communicate the current situation of the forest to the client, but the number of people is limited to just a few in one year. In order to think together with more people, we must create a model case where we know the local mountains and trees, using locally produced wood, which is not imported from overseas, but using familiar domestic and local timbers, and use local timbers that are familiar to us, and create a model case in which we communicate and discuss the circumstances of the forest."

The theme for 2022, the brand's first season, was Nagano PINE WITHERED is particularly serious in the forests of the prefecture. With the hope that many Japanese people will be interested in the problem of pine trees collectively fading, we have created a low table that makes use of red pine trees that were cut down before they were damaged by pine trees. It is structured to be disassembled and carried compactly, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

We produce accessories such as LED lantern shades and Sierra cup lids, which are made of resin, which fills up scratches on wood and transmits light. With the desire to consider the problem of eating by wild animals, which is becoming more serious due to the decline in hunters, products with a unique atmosphere with excellent design, such as shades made from ryob trees and resin, which deer likes to eat bark.

"We developed outdoor-related products because people who like outdoor activities often feel close to nature, so they are likely to think together with us. For example, surfers take the initiative to clean the beach and use natural waxes even though they are expensive. We wanted to create a brand that evokes the same trend in mountain forests. By having them get the KI-no product, we wanted to get people to feel the quality of local trees and think about the problem of people moving away from the mountains. In other words, it is a brand that considers the value of Japanese forests through domestic and prefectural wood."

In addition to outdoor products, we also have a table made of sported wood, with rain, bacteria, mold and other substances that have invaded damaged trees growing, resulting in a black mesh pattern. Watanabe says that products based on designs that they find cool would be an opportunity for many to think about the circumstances of forests.

"Ideally, the style would be that the person who acquired the KI-no product has contributed to the natural environment before I knew it. Furthermore, I would like to be a brand that can grow by ensuring that not only consumers but also peers of our business, and designers who sympathize with that thought create new products. Mountains were once developed in a natural way by humans, and now there are a variety of problems nowadays, but is mountains so weak? I hope we can share these feelings with people who are interested in KI-no."

One of the reasons for this was "ShinshuWatanabe says he has applied for the "Brand Awards."

"By taking the award, we hope that by ensuring that a wide range of generations who have never known KI-no will become known to the brand and increase its popularity, we can deliver our activities to many people. And we hope that we can think about how locally produced materials can circulate even without our involvement."

Innovate local forestry with highly designed products that value the story of the materials. As the initiative of "KI-no" takes the opportunity to take an interest in the current state of forests and as many people as possible will become interested in the current state of forests and society as a whole will look at issues, the situation in Japanese forests will change steadily, even if it is little by little.
